8 Surprising Secrets to Transform Your Yoga Practice

Pauline Brannigan, RYT 500 | AUG 1

Yoga is often misunderstood as solely a physical practice, or "Asana," in the Western world. However, Asana is just one of the eight limbs of yoga, designed to prepare the body for meditation and guide practitioners toward enlightenment. While Asana is essential, it’s not the only path. Here are eight ways to expand and enrich your yoga practice beyond your regular routine.

As a dedicated Forrest Yoga practitioner, I resonate with Ana Forrest’s mantra, “Evolve or Die.” Growth is a core part of yoga’s appeal, offering endless opportunities to learn, explore, and deepen your practice. Let’s dive into these eight transformative steps.

1. Explore Different Styles

If you’re loyal to a weekly Heated Power class or a Restorative session, try a new style. Each yoga style offers unique benefits. I was hesitant when my studio owner suggested a Yin class, assuming it was just “lying around.” Now, it’s one of my favorites, leaving me rejuvenated. Ashtanga introduced me to moving meditation, while Kundalini didn’t resonate at the time—but I’m open to trying it again. Step out of your comfort zone and discover what new styles reveal. This is where growth happens. Another Ana favorite is, "Snuggle up to your fear".

2. Learn from Different Teachers

Every yoga teacher brings unique insights, even within structured formats like Ashtanga. Their cues, sequencing, and personal practice can elevate your experience. Exploring new teachers introduces fresh perspectives and techniques, helping you grow in unexpected ways.

3. Focus on Your Breath

Many beginners struggle to sync breath with movement, and that’s okay—it’s a natural part of the journey. Dedicate a class to focusing solely on your breath. A simple rule: inhale during expansive movements (like Tadasana / High Mountain) and exhale during contractions (like Uttanasana / Forward Fold). Lengthen each breath, especially in slower-paced classes. If it feels challenging, start by focusing on breath during Sun Salutations. This will come over time. Notice when and why you may be holding your breath.

4. Embrace Props

Props like blocks and straps aren’t just for beginners—they enhance your practice by supporting alignment and protecting your body. Using props often signals an advanced understanding of your practice. Would you jump rope without a rope or ski without boots? Grab those blocks and straps to deepen your postures safely and effectively. Yoga Teachers everywhere are screaming use the stinking prop! Try it, you may love it. We promise.

5. Educate Yourself

Dive into yoga’s rich philosophy through books, podcasts, or articles. A favorite recommendation is The Yamas and Niyamasby Deborah Adele, a concise, modern guide to two of yoga’s eight limbs. It’s an accessible way to deepen your understanding. Be cautious with social media influencers and choose resources that resonate with your interests. Often they represent an unrealistic presentation of yoga with perfect bodies and flexibility beyond many seasoned teachers.

6. Attend a Yoga Retreat

A yoga retreat, whether a weekend nearby or a week in a destination like India, Costa Rica, or Bali, offers immersion in practice. Retreats blend various yoga styles, multiple daily classes, healthy meals, and enriching excursions. Whether you travel to a global hotspot or a local gem like Menla Resort & Spa in upstate New York, a retreat can transform your practice.

7. Experience a Sound Bath

Many studios now offer sound baths, where crystal bowls tuned to your chakras clear energy pathways. These sessions are deeply relaxing, often leading to profound peace and better sleep. Bring your mat, wear comfortable clothing (pajamas are fine!), and prepare for a unique, restorative experience.

8. Commit to a 30-Day Practice

Challenge yourself to practice yoga daily for 30 days. Plan a mix of studio classes, short online sessions from platforms like YouTube, or solo postures. Roll out your mat in the garden for a Sun Salutation, practice legs-up-the-wall in your living room (my dogs love this), or make it a family challenge. Consistency builds depth and connection.

Final Thoughts

Your yoga journey is as unique as you are. While enlightenment is a rare destination, the experiences along the way are a worthy investment in your growth. Embrace these steps to evolve your practice and discover new dimensions of yoga.
